- Subterranean Termites
Subterranean termites require direct access to water, and as such,
can be exterminated through soil poisoning. They often leave signs
including earthen tubes outside of their nesting areas, connecting
the walls of your home with the ground. They may also enter through
cracks in the foundation, floors, and walls. They do not require
access to outside groundwater when there is water, such as a
plumbing leak, available to them. Subterranean termites only burrow
with the grain of the wood. These termites are also noticed when
they swarm in the early spring or fall.
- Non-Subterranean Termites
Non-subterranean termites live in dry wood without outside sources
of moisture. They exist mostly in Hawaii, and in coastal areas from
California to Virginia. They can burrow across the grain of any wood
as well as with it, unlike their subterranean cousins. These
termites are also killed through soil poisoning.
